Molecular Sound composed the music for Sky Cinema's 2019 Christmas advert, 12 Days Of Idris. We worked with Sky Creative, and closely with directing duo Ne-o and Idris Elba, to guide the musical direction of the ad. Composed by Dave Connolly.
The Brief
Sky Cinema built its Christmas campaign around Idris Elba and a twelve-days-of-Christmas idea. The music had two jobs at once: carry the festive warmth the spot is selling, and stay underneath a performance that is the reason people are watching. Because the musical direction mattered that much to the film, we agreed it directly with Ne-o and Idris.
The Sound
The film runs as a series of short vignettes hung on the twelve-days idea, so the score's first job is continuity: one mood carried across the cuts so the spot plays as a single piece rather than a run of separate gags. It stays warm enough to read as Christmas without tipping into pastiche, and it sits under Idris rather than competing with him, leaving the performance as the thing you watch.
