The Sound Of TNT Sports

Right By The Fans

Client: TNT Sports

Roles: Sonic Branding, Music Composition

Category: Sonic Branding

Year: 2024

BT Sport, the UK's home of sport for over a decade, became TNT Sports – the biggest sports broadcast rebrand in a decade. Teaming up with fellow composition studio WMP, our brief was to build TNT Sports a whole new sonic identity for the entire channel: from its on-screen presentation to bespoke theme music for every sport it broadcasts.

The Brief

Our brief was to create the sound of the entire channel: an on-screen presentation (OSP) that ties every piece of branding together, and a family of sport-specific Pillar tracks, all while staying true to being right by the fans and honouring the community.

How We Made It

We got as close as possible to the action across the UK and Europe throughout 2023 – ringside for Joe Joyce v Zhang Zhilei at the Copperbox Arena, capturing Ben Foster's last-minute penalty save for Wrexham at the Racecourse Ground, pitchside at Centre Court, Wimbledon, and trackside for the final stage of the Tour de France. From these recordings – and sounds ranging from Wrexham chants to the scrape of chalk on a cue at the Crucible – we composed a core brand track and six sport-specific Pillar themes: Premier League, Champions League, Cricket, Combat Sports, Motorsports and Rugby. We tied it all together with live string recordings at Abbey Road and custom reverbs captured inside an empty Wembley Stadium.

The OSP

Alongside the six sport-specific Pillars, we built the OSP – the sound of TNT Sports' on-screen presentation. It's the channel's sonic wallpaper: menu navigation, presentation beds, stings and idents that all carry the same DNA as the core brand track, whatever a viewer is watching.

The Pillars

Beyond the core brand track sits a family of Pillar themes, one for every sport TNT Sports broadcasts – each sharing the OSP's sonic DNA but shaped by the sport itself. That identity came from a mammoth summer on the road, recording across the TNT Sports calendar: the Tour de France, Wimbledon, penalty saves at Wrexham FC, boxing ringside. With press access putting us close enough to touch the action, we captured sounds no off-the-shelf library could ever give us.
